Daily Drawing for Sept 14.
It’s been a few days since the last DD. I’ve been working on a larger piece for a CG Hub Drawing Jam, and also on some military projects. Here’s a quick hand sketch I did. I’m trying to accelerate my hand drawing skills. They’re one of those complex, angular shapes that everyone knows by sight. I’m trying to keep the hand drawings under 5 minutes so that I can learn to capture the angular relationships quicker and more accurately.

My fiancé asked for a piggy strapped to a bunch of colorful balloons. I think she’s in a Disney mood! (My personal favorite is probably The Emperor’s New Groove, but there are so many good ones to choose from.) Unfortunately, today is one of those days when I just didn’t muster the creative oomph to undertake such a task. Instead I practiced a bit of observational drawing, using a photo reference. I got as far as the roughing in of some shaded values, and I think I’ll polish this one up a bit tomorrow. Don’t worry babe, your pig aviator is coming.

The prompt from my fiancé was “jello castle”. Jello is tough, bee tee dubs. I find that using a displacement map on the background, coupled with base color (50% opacity), highlight, shadow and “recolor” layers make for a sufficiently jello look. What I mean by “recolor” is an additional layer (normal blending mode, 80-100% opacity) where I repainted some of the too transparent areas where the thickest jello should be. My fiancé gave me the prompt for this Daily Drawing. She said, “I don’t know… A giraffe with a top hat, I guess!” Voilá! (Total time was about 45 minutes. I’m getting faster, but this is definitely not my best medium.)
